EVAPO-RUST® is ideal for removing rust because:

 

  • Compared to traditional acid-based or basic pickling agents, it protects the non-oxidized metal thanks to its selective chelating action, without requiring periodic surveillance to prevent it from corroding even the non-oxidized metal underlying the rust patina, or neutralizing the acid post-pickling. All the more so in the case of rust patina not spread uniformly over the entire surface of the metal, with consequent inevitable corrosion of the non-oxidized metal parts in contact with the acid as soon as the object to be treated is immersed in the tank.

 

  • Compared to converters, it avoids the danger, especially in the case of thickening, that the conversion layer is unable to extend to the entire oxidized thickness, i.e. that a residual rust layer remains between the surface conversion layer and the underlying non-oxidized metal.

 

  • Compared to both acid-based or basic pickling agents, and converters, it minimizes the structural embrittlement of the metal caused by the accidental introduction of hydrogen into the crystal lattice ( hydrogen embrittlement ) during treatment.

Performance

Used by the USNavy, USAir Force, USArmy, NATO, CIA, FBI and recommended by the NRA Gunsmithing School, EVAPO-RUST® selectively removes even the most consistent layers of rust on steel, iron, cast iron and chrome.

Surface coatings such as bluing, parkerisation, bluing and zinc phosphate will also be removed in approximately 30 minutes.

Easy

No special equipment. Not applicable by brush (unless the end user has the patience to continue applying EVAPO-RUST® by brush on the rusty piece until the oxide is completely removed; feasible only for very thin oxide patinas).

Oxidation inhibitor

After the treatment, the piece must be rinsed with water before any further treatment (eg: phosphating, painting, chrome plating, anticorrosive protection, refueling, etc.).

 

Otherwise, in the absence of the final rinsing phase with water, evaporating EVAPO-RUST® will leave on the surface of the piece a thin protective film capable of inhibiting short-term oxidation up to a maximum of 2 weeks (only for indoor storage), in operation mainly both of the ambient humidity present and of the surface roughness of the metal.

 

For medium / long-term indoor storage, to replace the traditional oil-based dewatering protective agents, we recommend the innovative water-based anticorrosive protective RUST BANDIT®.

Water-based

It is non-corrosive and does not damage brass, copper, aluminum, gold, lead, titanium, steel, cast iron, chromium, solder, vinyl, plastic, neoprene, silicone, glass, cork or wood.

 

The only incompatibilities are cadmium and related alloys (eg: paints, stabilizers, cadmium, etc.) and magnesium and related alloys (eg: zamak).

 

High carbon steel becomes dark in contact with EVAPO-RUST®; the carbon can be partially removed during rinsing with water by rubbing, for example, with a cloth.

 

It is advisable to completely immerse the metal object to be pickled because, in the case of only partial immersion, some pieces may have a dark line at the air / liquid interface.

Tanks

Ideal for the reconditioning of the inside of the tanks:

 

  • thanks to its selective chelating action, it protects all the non-oxidized metal thickness, preventing excessive thinning of the sheet.

 

  • thanks to the water-based formula it minimizes the structural weakening of the metal (hydrogen embrittlement) against vibrations, resonances, etc ...

 

It is not necessary to fill the tank with abrasive material (eg: screws, bolts, grit, etc.): just guarantee the sufficient timing of contact with the metal and EVAPO-RUST® will solubilize all the rust present, stopping exactly and automatically at the interface with the non-oxidized metal substrate.

 

Unlike acids, it will not remove non-oxidized metal to the thickness of the sheet, also ensuring compatibility with gaskets (eg: petrol tap) or non-ferrous metal parts (eg: chrome plating) that may be in contact.

 

Unless the user has suitable tools to visually check the pickling progress inside the tank (eg: camera), it is recommended NOT to dilute EVAPO-RUST®: in fact, if diluted, the maximum timing of 24 / 48 hours valid for ready-to-use will no longer be indicative, resulting in the risk that the user will rotate (if only partially filled), or empty (if completely filled) the tank before having removed all the rust present locally.

 

For medium / long-term protection of the tank, instead of the traditional oil-based anticorrosive protective agents, we recommend the innovative water-based anticorrosive protective RUST-BANDIT®, formulated by the same US manufacturer of EVAPO-RUST® using mainly organic ingredients of biological derivation; the dewatering properties of the product allow it to be applied directly to still wet metal, avoiding the need for preliminary drying.

 

Refer to the Refill Method detailed below for recommended operating procedure.

Engine cooling circuit

EVAPO-RUST® is also extremely effective for selectively pickling the ducts of the vehicle cooling circuit; otherwise it will be ineffective on the light alloy parts, or in the presence of mineral deposits (eg limestone) to cover the oxide.

 

Refer to the Flushing Method detailed below for the recommended operating procedure.

Dilution

EVAPO-RUST®, while tolerating further significant percentages of dilution with water than what we sell ready-to-use, is supplied with a water content exactly in accordance with the specifications of the US manufacturer

 

ENVIREM SRL imports the active ingredient EVAPO-RUST® (made in USA) and mixes it with water (made in Italy).

 

By distributing EVAPO-RUST® under the original brand, we are consequently obliged to strictly comply with the prescribed dilution percentage.

 

Sold ready-to-use with the registered trademark EVAPO-RUST® means guaranteeing the customer a maximum consumption of 60 gr. of anhydrous rust per liter.

 

Further dilution with water, compared to what we sell ready for use, does not entail any significant advantage:

 

  • the degree of saturation of the active ingredient contained in the formula, which corresponds to the total amount of rust that can be removed (i.e. consumption), remains exactly the same, regardless of the degree of dilution actually adopted, equal to a maximum of 60 g. of anhydrous rust per liter of EVAPO-RUST®

 

  • the reaction speed to remove the oxide increases proportionally to the degree of dilution with water, therefore the maximum timing of 24/48 hours of ready-to-use will no longer be indicative and it will be up to the user to evaluate when the pickling will actually be completed; for this purpose, to avoid the excessive slowing down of the chemical reaction, it is recommended not to dilute more than the ratio 1: 1 (e.g. 1 Lt. EVAPO-RUST® + 1 Lt. water)

Minimum use temperature

since the chemical reaction that determines the selective pickling of the rust is endothermic, ie it absorbs energy (heat) from the external environment, it is recommended to use EVAPO-RUST® at a solution temperature above 15 ° C.

 

At temperatures below 5 ° C the chemical reaction is strongly delayed.

 

In the interval between 15 ° C and 20 ° C the reaction is relatively fast; while the maximum speed is recorded in the range between 35 ° C and 50 ° C.

How does it work

✔️ Selective chelating action on the oxide to be removed compared to the non oxidized metal substrate

EVAPO-RUST® works at a pH between 6.1 and 7 (neutral) by a selective chelating action: this is a chemical reaction where a large synthetic molecule forms a bond with the metal and keeps it in solution.

 

  • the chelating action is a chemical reaction where a metallic element forms a coordination bond with a reactant called a chelating agent. The product of this reaction forms a very stable molecular structure with the metal element in the center surrounded ("pincer") by the chelating agent, simulating the grip of the claws of a crab (hence the term chelation).

 

  • the selective action derives from the presence in the EVAPO-RUST® formula of a chelating agent of organic origin possessing sufficient energy to form the aforementioned coordination bond only and exclusively with the iron contained in that particular hydrated oxide commonly called rust, but not with the iron contained in steel or cast iron which would require more energy.

 

 

This chemical reaction therefore imitates what already happens in nature, for example, in chlorophyll with magnesium or in hemoglobin with iron: in fact, to transfer iron into the blood, hemoglobin similarly exploits the chelating action of the 4 protein groups constituents (porphyrin rings) to form the chemical complex called hematin (or heme group) with iron.

Most of the chelating agents bind different types of metal; the active ingredient in the EVAPO-RUST® formula binds exclusively with iron.

 

The selective chelating agent is too expensive to be used in large quantities in the finished product formula.

 

An organic molecule capable of easily releasing sulfur by forming a ferric sulfate complex was added to the formula to release iron from the selective chelating agent.

 

This allows the selective chelating agent to remove more iron from the oxide.

 

The organic sulfur-releasing molecule is much less expensive than the selective chelating agent, making EVAPO-RUST® economical to use.

Incompatibility with other materials

the incompatibilities (irreversible stains on the metal) ascertained so far are n ° 2:

 

  • magnesium and related alloys (e.g. crankcase covers, zamak (carburetors, injection pumps, etc.)

 

  • cadmium and related alloys (eg: cadmium plating ("tropicalization"); cadmium paints, etc.)

 

Carbon steel, once treated with EVAPO-RUST®, will undergo a certain degree of surface darkening.

 

Carbon steel is usually used to give flexibility to metal objects (eg: springs, blades, etc). Some of the carbon responsible for surface darkening can be removed simply by wiping with a rag.

 

Darkening is determined by the carbon present in the steel alloy. This natural phenomenon is known in chemistry as carbon migration.

 

The carbon moves (or migrates) towards the outer superficial layers of the metal and is deposited in the pores. The removal of the rust (hydrated iron oxide) reduces the proportion of iron vs carbon, leaving a greater concentration of carbon on the external surface, with consequent inevitable darkening of the metal.

 

This darkening does not create adverse effects on the metal: it simply represents the process of migration of carbon from the inside to the outside of the metal.

 

EVAPO-RUST® is non-corrosive and does not damage brass, copper, aluminum, gold, lead, titanium, steel, cast iron, chromium, solder, vinyl, plastic, neoprene, silicone, glass, cork or wood.

 

EVAPO-RUST® will remove surface coatings such as bluing, bluing, parkerizations and zinc phosphate in about 30 minutes (the type of iron oxides affected are: Maghemite (Fe2 (3+) O3), Magnetite (Fe2 + Fe2 (3+)) O4), Wustite (FeO), Iron Hydroxide (Fe (OH) 2), Iron Tri-Hydroxide (Bernalite) (Fe (OH) 3), Akageneite (ß-Fe3 + O (OH, Cl)), Pheroxite (Fe3 + O (OH)), Lepidocrocite (? -Fe3 + O (OH)) and parkerizations (both types: manganese & zinc)).

 

On the other hand, Hematite (Fe2O3) and Goethite (a-Fe3 + O (OH)) are not affected by EVAPO-RUST®. Even the anodizations will not be removed. Even varnishes and paints will not be removed, unless they are based on oxides (usually included in shades of yellow, orange and red).

 

There will be no negative stress in the metal after treatment with EVAPO-RUST®; the only negative variation will possibly be due to the attack of rust caused before pickling.

 

In case of local thickening of the rust patina on cast iron, carbon steel and chrome plating, at the end of the pickling, the vacuum will remain locally due to lack of material ("camolatura").

Storage

EVAPO-RUST® is extremely economical to use: due to the very low concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and its selective chelating capacity that remains unalterable for a long time, it is easily reused.

 

EVAPO-RUST® has a duration:

  • unlimited if not used and stored in its original packaging

 

  • limited after 1st use, of variable duration according to the specific biodegradability rate determined by the bacteria present on the metal being treated that come into contact with EVAPO-RUST®

 

After the 1st use, it is advisable to cover the tank or the container intended for the storage of EVAPO-RUST® not hermetically , in order to limit both the evaporation of the aqueous fraction and the proliferation of anaerobic bacteria: in fact, pour the EVAPO- RUST® already used in a hermetically closed container (eg: tank closed with the screw cap) determines the most favorable conditions for the multiplication of anaerobic bacterial consortia responsible for biodegradation in the absence of oxygen.

 

Practical applications have shown an average duration of 12 months of EVAPO-RUST® after the 1st use (and in some cases even well beyond this limit).

 

The water contained in the formulation of EVAPO-RUST® is the only component that can evaporate; if the amount of water lost due to evaporation is restored, the EVAPO-RUST® solution will be revitalized.

 

Therefore, before use, we suggest to put a mark on the internal wall of the tank at the air interface Vs. EVAPO-RUST® to record the maximum level; subsequently, it will be necessary to maintain this level by periodically adding water to restore the aliquot lost due to evaporation.

Disposal

EVAPO-RUST® will be used indefinitely as long as it is effective in removing the oxide; after which he will become exhausted and must be disposed of.

 

In addition to the visual verification based on performance effectiveness, there is an empirical method to estimate when EVAPO-RUST® becomes exhausted by quantifying the weight loss suffered by the various pieces treated: in fact, by weighing the various metal pieces subject to treatment both before (but after preliminary cleaning), both after pickling and knowing that 1 liter of EVAPO-RUST® removes up to 60 grams of anhydrous rust, if for example a 5 L solution is used, i.e. with consumption indicated up to 60 gr / Lt. x 5 Lt. = 300 gr, the user will have an estimate of the maximum foreseeable consumption.

 

In case of necessity of disposal before the first use, EVAPO-RUST® constitutes a special non-dangerous waste; after the first use, the organic and / or inorganic substrate removed can significantly alter the chemical-physical composition of the release solution; in any case, it is recommended to dispose of the product, exhausted or not, as well as, if necessary, also the aqueous washing solution, at an authorized collection plant for special or hazardous waste, in accordance with the provisions of the law in force.

The first 4 methods (Immersion / Filling / Ultrasound / Flushing) can be used when it is possible to immerse the metal piece to be treated in the tank, or if the object itself can act as a tank (eg: tank, blind and through thread, etc. .); otherwise, the other 2 (Spray / Adhesion) when the metal object to be treated is too bulky to be immersed.

 

To remove rust from bulky objects we recommend the gel product B547 (SOLENIS DREWCLEAN B547 re-bottled in a 1. Lt. bottle and in a 5 Lt. tank).

 

On the other hand, to remove oxidation and carbon deposits from aluminum alloys and yellow alloys (copper, bronze, brass) we recommend the water-based concentrate C7345 (SOLENIS DREWCLEAN C7345 re-bottled in a 1. Lt. bottle and in a 5 Lt. tank. ).

Immersion method

PRELIMINARY CLEANING : removal of any organic and / or inorganic surface layer covering the rust patina with a suitable detergent / degreaser and / or descaler.

 

IMMERSION : immerse the metal object to be pickled in the tub for at least 30 minutes in case of thin patina up to 24/48 hours for the most consistent rust patinas. If EVAPO-RUST® is diluted with water, the aforementioned timing is no longer indicative because it progressively increases according to the degree of dilution actually adopted. To avoid the excessive slowing down of the chemical reaction, it is recommended not to dilute over the ratio 1: 1 (eg: 1 Lt. EVAPO-RUST® + 1 Lt. water). Even if diluted, consumption remains unchanged: 1 Lt. of EVAPO-RUST® removes up to 60 gr. of anhydrous rust. It is recommended to completely immerse the metal object to be pickled because, in the case of only partial immersion, some pieces may have a dark line at the air / liquid interface.

 

NB: only in the case of local thickening of rust it is essential that the metal object to be pickled is periodically (every 6/12 hours) rinsed with water and / or brushed in correspondence with the rusted areas: in fact, the structure of the rust is intrinsically porous , metal fragments that are only partially rusted externally can be produced (and as such not completely solubilized thanks to the selective chelating action of EVAPO-RUST®) which, although already detached from the underlying substrate still rusty, can remain trapped in the roughness of the same; if left in place, the contact points between these metal fragments no longer rusted and the metal substrate still rusted do not allow the access of the liquid and therefore the treatment.

 

POST-TREATMENT : before any further treatment (e.g. phosphating, painting, chrome plating, anticorrosive protection, refueling, etc.), the piece must first be rinsed with water and, immediately after, thoroughly dried to prevent reappearance of oxidation. The final drying phase can be avoided if an innovative water-based anticorrosive (indoor) protective agent with dewatering properties is applied immediately after the water rinse phase: RUST-BANDIT® In the absence of the final water rinse phase, EVAPO -RUST® evaporating it will leave on the surface of the piece a thin anti-corrosive protective film capable of inhibiting indoor oxidation in the short term up to 2 weeks maximum.

Filling method

PRELIMINARY CLEANING : see previous method.

 

FILLING : according to the type of object to be treated, 2 alternative cases can be differentiated:

 

  • object that can be completely inspected inside (eg: blind thread, etc.): see previous method; or

  • object does not fully inspected inside (eg .: tank, etc.): the recommended operating procedure is as follows:

    • since EVAPO-RUST® also removes oxide-based paints, first check for their presence, perhaps also carrying out a test on a limited and / or hidden surface of paint. Typically, oxide-based paints are included in red / orange / yellow shades; however, it is not certain that a paint included in the shades red / orange / yellow is actually based on oxide.

    • after emptying the fuel, lubricant, etc. residual residue that may still be present, place the tank inside a collection tank with a capacity greater than the volume of EVAPO-RUST® used for the treatment, in order to ensure the collection of any leaked liquid in the event of rust through and / or accidental spillage.

    • since the chemical reaction that determines the selective removal of rust is endothermic, that is, it absorbs energy (heat) from the external environment, it is recommended to use EVAPO-RUST® at a solution temperature above 15 ° C; therefore, it will be necessary to control and guarantee the maintenance of this minimum temperature for the entire duration of the treatment.

    • if, in addition to rust, there is also organic and / or inorganic deposit inside the tank, preliminary cleaning with a suitable detergent / degreaser (e.g. ENGINE CLEANER ) and / or descaler (e.g. C7345 )

    • after having closed and checked the tightness of all tank openings (filler cap, fuel tap, breather), pour EVAPO-RUST® directly into the tank:

      • if the tank is still installed on the frame, the volume of EVAPO-RUST® introduced must be sufficient to send all the rusted sheet into submersion.

      • in case of tank removed from the frame, the volume of EVAPO-RUST® introduced may be less and will depend both on the actual amount of rust to be removed and on the number of successive tank rotations that the end user will want to perform: in fact, the more the higher the volume of EVAPO-RUST® used, the lower the number of consecutive rotations necessary to send the entire rusty internal surface into submersion and vice versa. There is no need to continuously rotate the tank: just leave it stationary for the time necessary to remove the oxide. Unless a camera is used to video-inspect the interior, before proceeding with the next rotation, it is advisable to wait 24/48 hours, in order to ensure the removal of any local oxide thickening (24/48 hours if and only if EVAPO-RUST® is not diluted; if diluted, however, the maximum time will be progressively longer, depending on the degree of dilution actually adopted). In both cases (tank disassembled or not), in the presence of local thickening of oxide, it will be necessary to periodically shake the entire tank containing EVAPO-RUST®: in fact, being the structure of the rust intrinsically porous, fragments of non-rusted metal (and as such not solubilized by virtue of the selective chelating action of EVAPO-RUST®) which, although already detached from the underlying substrate which is still rusty, can remain trapped in its roughness; if left in place, the points of contact between these fragments and the substrate do not allow the access of the liquid and therefore the treatment.

 

  • once the rust has been completely removed, we have 3 alternative choices:

    • ready-to-use tank:

      • empty the tank and rinse with water

      • empty the tank and, to prevent the reappearance of rust, immediately rinse with denatured alcohol

      • fill up immediately after rinsing with denatured alcohol

  

  • tank to be subjected to subsequent processing (eg: resin coating) within 10/14 days. from the end of the treatment:

    • empty the tank without rinsing with water to use EVAPO-RUST® also as a short-term anticorrosive protection (10/14 days max)

    • before further processing rinse with water

    • empty the tank and, to prevent the reappearance of rust, rinse immediately afterwards with denatured alcohol

    • immediately after rinsing with denatured alcohol, carry out the next process (e.g. application of resin on the walls)

  

  • tank in long-term indoor storage (warehouse, museum, etc.), or subsequent processing (eg: resin coating) over 10/14 days. from the end of the treatment:

    • empty the tank and rinse with water

    • empty the tank and, to prevent the reappearance of rust, immediately afterwards apply the innovative water - based anticorrosive protection RUST-BANDIT on the still wet sheet

    • adequately rotate the tank to ensure metal contact Vs. RUST-BANDIT® ® over the entire metal surface and, subsequently, empty and allow to air dry. In case of subsequent processing (eg: application of resin on the walls), proceed with rinsing with water as described in point b.2 above

    • check the absence of oxidation inside the tank every 6/12 months and, if necessary, apply RUST-BANDIT® again

Ultrasound method

Significantly accelerates pickling speed thanks to ultrasonic technology commonly used in industrial applications; moreover, in the case of substantial rust patina, it does not require the intermediate rinsing or brushing phase mentioned above.

 

PRELIMINARY CLEANING : see previous method.

 

WASHING : fill the ultrasonic washing machine with a sufficient quantity of EVAPO-RUST® to reach the level indicated by the manufacturer; immerse the piece to be treated and start the washing program. The duration of the application will depend on the thickness of the rust to be removed: for thin patinas it takes about 1 minute, while for more consistent patinas about 1 hour.

It is the fastest application mode for removing rust.

Flushing method

PRELIMINARY CLEANING : see previous method.

 

FLUSHING : by way of example, the following operating procedure is proposed for the treatment of the cooling circuit of an engine:

  • empty the cooling circuit and rinse it with water; in case of inorganic deposits (e.g. limestone), use a suitable descaler

  • fill the circuit with EVAPO-RUST® (ready-to-use undiluted)

  • start the engine at idle for a few minutes; turn it off and leave it for at least one night

  • empty the circuit collecting EVAPO-RUST® for possible reuse

  • if necessary, repeat the process 1 to 5 times

  • at the end, once all the oxide has been removed, rinse with water and immediately fill with coolant

 

NB: when flushed, EVAPO-RUST® tends to produce foam in quantities directly proportional to the nominal operating flow rate: the greater the flow rate, the greater the foam production.

 

On the other hand, if the flow rate is reduced to limit foaming, foam can escape from the vent valves if it falls below a certain limit flow rate (critical flow rate) essentially depending on the diameter and roughness of the internal surface of the pipe .

 

Furthermore, the residual air bubbles in the piping prevent local contact with rust Vs. EVAPO-RUST®, inevitably determining the permanence of oxidation. Therefore, the operative solutions applicable to mediate between these contrasting needs are n ° 2:

  • add a suitable antifoam additive to EVAPO-RUST® (where suitable it also refers to the post-treatment use of the pipe)

  • limit the flow, while keeping it above the critical flow rate such as to determine the closure of the air bleed valves, together with the complete saturation of the useful drainage section of the pipeline (given that the critical flow rate increases as the diameter of the pipeline increases, this solution it is feasible only for limited diameters).

Spray method

PRELIMINARY CLEANING : see previous method.

 

SPRAY: prepare a leachate collection tank containing a submersible or self-priming recirculation pump connected to a sprayer.

 

Fill the tank with a sufficient quantity of EVAPO-RUST® to guarantee both the suction of the pump and the filling of the delivery pipe.

 

It is advisable to limit the recirculation flow rate to minimize foam production.

 

Spray EVAPO-RUST® directly on the rusted surface ensuring a contact time between EVAPO-RUST® and the rust of at least 30 minutes in case of thin patina; up to 24/48 hours for the most consistent rust patinas.

 

NB : only in the case of local thickening of rust it is essential that the metal object to be pickled is periodically (every 6/12 hours) rinsed with water and / or brushed in correspondence with the rusted areas: in fact, the structure of the rust is intrinsically porous , metal fragments that are only partially rusted externally can be produced (and as such not completely solubilized thanks to the selective chelating action of EVAPO-RUST®) which, although already detached from the underlying substrate still rusty, can remain trapped in the roughness of the same; if left in place, the contact points between these metal fragments no longer rusted and the metal substrate still rusted do not allow the access of the liquid and therefore the treatment.

PRELIMINARY CLEANING : see previous method.

 

MEMBERSHIP: we suggest 2 alternative methods of application:

 

  • dip a sheet of absorbent paper into the EVAPO-RUST® solution; squeeze it and make it adhere to the surface to be treated, collecting any percolating liquid; or

  • pour EVAPO-RUST® into a sprayer; apply a sheet of dry absorbent paper to the rusty surface; spray EVAPO-RUST® on the absorbent paper sheet, collecting all the percolating liquid.

 

Then cover the wet absorbent paper with a plastic sheet (eg transparent film for food use) to limit the evaporation of the aqueous fraction.

Periodically check the progress of the pickling and, in case of consistent rust, periodically give the piece a light brush.

 

If necessary, repeat the application.
